I love OSSEC ossec.net [ossec.net] ) for host-based intrusion detection and response. This article provides an excellent and very straight-forward example of creating an OSSEC decoder and the subsequent rules. Nicely done.

A nice, free battery meter for Windows. More granular than the built-in battery meter that ships with Windows, plus it also provides a rough time estimate of the power remaining in your battery. Simple, clean, effective, and free.
